The Cook out

Guess who’s coming to dinner?

In communities across the African Diaspora, “The Cookout” is a family reunion, a forum for spilling the tea, a setting for intergenerational clashes, a canvas of Black pride. These stories imagine this unapologetically Black institution in far-off planets and magical realms. Intermingled with recipes like ‘Jerk Basilisk’ and ‘Grandpa’s Old-Style Neptunian Brew,’ these inventive and thought-provoking stories promise to make you laugh, gasp, shriek, and call your mama by the end. Contributors will include established as well as emerging Black authors.

Make sure to bring your Tupperware because you’ll be coming back for seconds.

What we’re Looking For

Speculative Fiction

Somethings got to be magical. Sci-Fi, fabulism, magic realism, fantasy, myths, RPG-inspired storytelling, even some horror. Give us a little of the otherworldly. Afro-futurism at it’s tastiest!

The Diaspora Experience

There’s more than one way to cookout. Give us something that represents your experience.

No “Black Trauma” Stories

It’s been done.
That’s not to say that there can’t be conflict or difficult situations or conversations, but… let’s aim for happiness, healing, and fun. It’s a celebration!

Cookout Conventions

Cultural touchpoints that revolve around the family cookout. Food, dancing, family, gossip, catching up, grilling, recipe sharing or recipe hoarding, all the fixins.

New and Established Authors

We have some anchor authors we are pursuing (announcements to follow) but we would love to be a vehicle for some first-time published authors.
